Since opening in 1989, the course has earned a spot among Golf Digest’s Best New Courses and recognition from Golfweek as one of the Southeast’s Top 50. Designed by Tom Jackson, River Hills stands out among coastal layouts thanks to its rolling terrain, mature forests, and dynamic elevation changes—rare elements in the Myrtle Beach area. The course blends classic and contemporary design, with strategic bunkering, risk-reward par 5s, and tight doglegs that challenge shot placement. Standout holes include the dramatic par-5 17th, a sweeping double dogleg, and the demanding par-4 14th, which calls for precision from tee to green. River Hills has continued to evolve, with a 2003 renovation enhancing playability for all skill levels. More recently, the club installed new TifEagle bermudagrass greens in 2022 and overhauled every bunker on the course in 2023. Nestled among freshwater wetlands and towering pines, the course is a haven for local wildlife—where golfers might spot fox squirrels, wading birds, or an alligator basking near the water’s edge.
