Why Myrtle Beach for America’s 250th?

Myrtle Beach offers a relaxed, family-friendly way to celebrate a major national milestone. Instead of choosing between a history-focused trip and a summer beach vacation, guests can enjoy both.

From Embassy Suites Myrtle Beach and Kingston Resorts, you can spend the morning on the sand, the afternoon at the pool or exploring the Grand Strand, and the evening enjoying local dining, live entertainment, or anniversary-year events. Nearby historic sites and South Carolina 250 programming add depth to the trip, while the oceanfront resort setting keeps the experience easy and memorable.

A Brief History of Myrtle Beach

Long before Myrtle Beach became a popular vacation destination, the area was home to the Waccamaw People, who lived along the coast and named the region “Waccamaw,” meaning “Coming and Going”—a reference to the tides. Skilled hunters, farmers, and traders, they helped shape the area’s deep connection to its natural environment.

Originally known as New Town, the community remained sparsely populated until 1900, when a new railroad opened the coast to visitors. That same year, the town was renamed Myrtle Beach after the native Wax Myrtle shrubs that grew along the dunes. Incorporated in 1938 and later becoming a city in 1957, Myrtle Beach quickly grew into one of the East Coast’s premier beach destinations.

During World War II, the Myrtle Beach Army Airfield trained thousands of pilots, bringing new families and economic growth to the area. Many returned after the war, helping build the hotels, businesses, and tourism industry that define Myrtle Beach today.
